The East Coast Tour of Discovery is a life-changing voyage to the opposite side of the United States.
It is primarily designed for 8th grade students who have completed a United States history class,
but it is open to younger and older students on an individual basis.
The trip is one week in length, and includes visits to and tours of the following locations (and more!):
Jamestown, Virginia, Colonial Williamsburg, Mount Vernon, Arlington National Cemetery,
Washington, DC, the US Capitol, the White House, the National Archives, the Air and Space Museum, the American History Museum, the Museum of African-American History and Culture, the Natural History
Museum, the National Holocaust Memorial and Museum, the Washington Monument, the Lincoln
Memorial, the Jefferson Memorial, the Vietnam Memorial Wall, the National World War II Memorial,
the Korean War Memorial, the Pentagon 9/11 Memorial, the Marine Corps Memorial,
Gettysburg Battlefield, Lancaster, Pennsylvania (where we eat a home-cooked meal served
by an Amish family), HersheyPark Amusement Park in Hershey, Pennsylvania, and New York City,
where in addition to staying right in the heart of Times Square, we also get to see the sun go down
from the Top of the Rock viewing platform at Rockefeller Center (70 stories above the city!),
visit the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, explore the Financial District including the 9/11 Memorial
and Wall Street, stroll down Fifth Avenue, take in the sights of Central Park, experience
some of the best Italian food in America in Little Italy, and take the subway into Brooklyn and
walk across the Brooklyn Bridge to Chinatown. Oh, and we get to see a little show on
Broadway you may have heard of called Hamilton.
All in one week!
We travel around on a luxury motorcoach with recliner seats, panorama windows, individual
light fixtures and air vents, a DVD player with screens throughout the coach and onboard Wi-Fi.
We stay in three-star and above hotel accommodations with four boys or four girls to a room
(typical hotels include Courtyard by Marriot and Hampton Inn and Suites, and in Manhattan we
stay in the iconic 1930's Art Deco-styled Hotel Edison on West 47th Street, less than 200 feet
from the center of Times Square).
We eat very well on the trip. Breakfast is full-service buffet-style at the hotels. Lunch
and dinner are usually in settings where multiple offerings are available to accommodate
any dietary restrictions students may have. Dinners are similar, with a couple exceptions
being the dinner with the Amish family in Lancaster and the night we see Hamilton,
which is at the Hard Rock Cafe in Times Square.
